The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) had its beginning during the summer of 1845 in Augusta, Georgia. Of the many things that happened at that organizational meeting, two actions happened that would forever mark us as a missional people. Those two actions were the formation of the Foreign Mission Board and the Board of Domestic Missions. As you can probably detect from their names, the Foreign Mission Board was appointed to take the gospel to foreign lands while the Board of Domestic Missions (later to become known as the Home Mission Board was established to organize and strategize to reach people here in America.
Unless you have been a member of or acquainted with Southern Baptists for more than fifteen years, you have probably never heard of the Foreign Mission Board or the Home Mission Board because several years ago now, the Foreign Mission Board became known as the International Mission Board (see www.imb.org) and the Home Mission Board became known as the North American Mission Board (see www.namb.net). It was the belief of the SBC leadership that these original names were not as descriptive as needed and were even offensive to some. You can appreciate the fact that people of other lands might not appreciate being called “foreigners” and people, no matter where they live, call their country “home.” The present board names seem to be more descriptive and helpful as we communicate with people here and around the world.
Although much of what we do as a Southern Baptist Church dovetails neatly with our Southern Baptist entities, what we do as the missional people of Longview Heights Baptist Church is done in concert with time in prayer with our Lord and meetings with the staff and leadership of our church. Within the pages of this website you can read about our ever growing heart for missions. Should you have specific questions that are not answered here, feel free to write and we will do our best to answer your questions. Below, you will also find a concise short list of some SBC missions organization websites you might find helpful.
